A part number is a useful starting point when buying replacement engine parts, but it should not be the only check. Similar-looking parts can differ by engine version, production range, or installation. Use the following checklist to organize your inquiry before ordering.
1. Record the complete number
Photograph the marking on the original part and type it exactly as shown, including letters, suffixes, spaces, and dashes. If a character is unclear, send a close-up rather than guessing. Keep packaging labels and previous purchase records when available.
A casting number identifies a casting and is not always the service part number for the complete assembly. A number printed on a removable label may also describe a subcomponent. Tell the supplier where each number was found.
2. Add the engine and machine information
Include the engine manufacturer, full engine model, and serial number from the nameplate. Add the machine make and model as separate details. The same machine model may have been supplied with different engines, and a replacement engine may differ from the original installation.
3. Check what the listing includes
Confirm whether you need a bare part, an assembled unit, or a kit. For example, a cylinder head listing may or may not include valves and other components; an overhaul kit may have several size options. Ask for the actual contents and required size instead of relying only on the main product photo.
4. Treat a cross-reference as a candidate
A cross-reference or superseded number helps narrow the search. It does not by itself confirm every application. Compare the relevant engine information, dimensions, mounting arrangement, and included components. Use the equipment manufacturer’s parts catalog or service information where available.
A useful inquiry format
- Original part number and a photo of the marking
- Engine model and serial number
- Machine make and model
- Photos of the original part and installation
- Required size, quantity, and kit contents
- Destination country and postal code for a shipping quote
If two sources disagree, resolve the difference before ordering or installation. Send your part details to DIESEL IZUMI support for review.
